Welcome to our blog. Dan & I are hoping to use this method to keep in touch with family and friends while we're away this winter. You'll have to bear with us through the learning process - neither of us have ever done this before. If it works the way we hope it will, we'll keep you updated with our where-abouts and share pictures. We're hoping that you'll use it to keep in contact with us too. The most recent entry will always be at the top of the page, so if you're new here, scroll down to the bottom to start or use the archive list. Our apologies to anyone who found the Travelpod blog only to have it disappear on them, but this site seems easier to use and like I said - we're beginners, so the easier the better.

P.S.

Aha! You're one of those people who don't leave the theatre until the last credit has rolled aren't you?

We arrived home safe and sound on Saturday afternoon. The drive home was long and boring, but the roads were bare and dry all the way. We pulled into Butte, Montana on Friday afternoon and because the weather was good and it was still pretty early, we decided to carry on to Great Falls. How were we to know that there were state final wrestling and basketball tournaments going on? There wasn't a hotel room to be had in the whole city! We ended up continuing on to Conrad. Where? Yeah, I'd never heard of it either, even though we must've passed by it a dozen or more times over the years. We'll probably continue to drive right by in the future too. Oh well, at least it had a dog-friendly motel.

So, the epic adventure ends with 7,638 miles (12,220.8 kms) added to the odometer in 89 days. We've enjoyed it, but coming home is always the best part of any journey.

The end is near

We had to pass right by it anyway so we camped one last night at Valley of Fire. This was the first place that we camped on this trip; it seemed right to end it here too.
As John Steinbeck said in Travels With Charley "Some trips are over before they end" (Or words to that effect - I don't remember exactly). That's the way it is with this trip. It's over, we just have to go home now. Provo, Utah tonight, Butte or maybe Great Falls, Montana tomorrow and home on Saturday. I am SO looking forward to seeing my bathtub!!!
Here are some final pictures of this hidden gem:

We have thoroughly enjoyed our winter get-away. Thanks for coming along with us.
See you soon.

You know what they say - all good things must come to an

And now for something completely different!

Viva Las Vegas, baby!
We've been in the desert a long time - we were craving some colour and glitz.
Vegas delivers.

Sadly, no, we didn't see them.

How would you like to have your teeth an entire story high?

You probably need to experience this kind of EXCESS once in a while to put the rest of your life into perspective.
Okay, perspective achieved. Time to move on.

Goodbye, Death Valley

Just a few more pictures from Death Valley.
This was a nice walk in Titus Canyon. One of the few places that we could go with Taz, and only because it was a road and not a trail.

This coyote was just wandering down the road.
Taz has taken a liking to the tent.

Scotty's Castle. Not our cup of tea really, but we thought we should see it because there was so much literature about it and it was only a couple of miles from our campground. It wasn't even really Scotty's castle. It was built by some multi millionaire (nobody even remembers who he was) that was bilked out of a fortune by some shyster called Scotty.
You can't really see it, but the very top of this turret has some beautiful tile work.

Ubehebe Crater is beautiful, but we almost got blown over the edge. The wind continues to howl!

Dan at the edge of the crater, I was cowering in the van. I'm really sick of wind!

Dogs are not allowed to spit kibble into people's hands??

Ouch!!!

The story goes that Death Valley was named as one of the 49ers looked back and said "Goodbye, Death Valley"
We overheard a ranger telling someone that Rhyolite was a really cool ghost town, so we stopped to see it. That ranger is a big, fat liar. Do not plan your next vacation around a trip to Rhyolite. You can see all that it has to offer in the following 2 photos...

Death Valley cont'd

Laptopia! Between 10am and 3pm this is the most visited spot in the park. No less than a dozen people on laptops at any given time.
Scenes around Death Valley:

This was on a drive called Artist's Drive. The variety of colours is quite amazing.

Trying to imagine what the gold prospectors that crossed here in 1849 must've thought when they saw this vast expanse of nothing that had to be crossed.

Nope, not snow - salt flats

Dan playing on "The Devils Golf Course"

A close up of the salt formations.

Badwater Basin is the lowest point in the US at -282 feet.

If you enlarge this, you might be able to see the sign post indicating level on the hillside.
This is a sign that we're sick of seeing.
More of the Artist's Drive

So yes, it's scenic and yes, the history is fascinating, but the campground is not exactly beautiful

And the wind is unbelievable! Just ask the guys that slept on top of thier tent last night...
